Extension..? or new building..!

KRA were invited in 2004 to look at an existing Medical Practice premises in Perth opposite Perth Royal Infirmary. The premises had met its limit in terms of accommodating the number of GPs and consulting space generally was poor. There were also demands for more administration staff and issues of H&S /DDA compliance.

The existing premises were located in the centre of Perth on a rectangular site. Part of the lower floor was dug into the steeply sloping ground.

The KRA solution to the brief was to keep the eight year old building and envelope the structure on all four sides together with removing the roof structure and building over and beyond it.

KRA introduced a simple wayfinding route for all patients starting at the existing entrance position. Patient flow is simple thereafter, and with concentration on light and colour the patient journey is a delight. The spaces are interesting and uplifting with security issues and confidentiality all well covered and not intrusive to the use of the building.

All spaces are naturally lit by daylight shafts and this in turns means less utilisation of artificial lighting sources.

The building was opened in 2005 by HRH Duke of Kent to a resounding applause from the patient population.
