Following on the heels of a project for NHS Dumfries and Galloway for a new Medical Centre including a Substance and alcohol abuse premises, amongst other projects in the district, KRA undertook a unique private project for one of the Medical Centre GP’s

KRA responded to their clients brief with their customary enthusiasm and the project was one the local Planning Authority embraced as…. it was “something different in Dumfries”.

KRA created a lofty multi-function play space for the children, incorporating a wet room etc. which is contemporary in shape and materials with a very high level of natural daylight from roof lighting and also high level windows in a vaulted ceiling arrangement. An external folding screen wall allows the external elevated and roofed balcony to work during the summer months as internal / external space in a seamless fashion and acts as good entertaining space.

Special consideration was given to the existing house and how it sat regarding the overlap with the new spaces to the rear, which has allowed the “new enlarged house” to sit comfortably with its new addition creating a startlingly light overall effect. In the broader part of the plan, the design was well considered, such that the spaces flow from the central hallway and additionally allowed “sneak” views out to the external spaces, thus giving an overall feeling of space.

KRA took the opportunity to incorporate a new Master Bedroom en suite and reconfigured the house bathroom along with a new utility room.

To aesthetically tie in with the existing house form, KRA opted for a local craftsman from Eskdalemuir to produce a standing seam roof in copper, which ties in with the red clay roof. All components in the build were locally sourced, including tactile cedar boarding which was utilized as an external material on the rear elevation; this simultaneously compliments the sharp white render finish to the existing house.
