Windsor Street Lane

Mews living in the heart of Edinburgh

At KRA, the idea of old and new, simply living together in harmony has long been a desire. At Windsor Street Lane, this is also true, with an infilling of a "missing tooth" in a row of mews properties.

The two small plots required imaginative thinking, particularly on the interiors, to provide modern open plan living with a feeling of space with natural daylighting forming a key element of its success.

KRA played with the use of a traditional pallet of materials and employed them in a modern fashion, with natural stonework walls, slate roof, cast iron gutters & downpipes, including traditional sash and case windows.

Employing a sliding timber screen to the front façade allows a play with the levels of privacy throughout the day. Modern photo-voltaics on the roof and high levels of insulation allow very low running costs.
